A simple way to make clay handles for a ceramic oven roasting dish.
Handles are super simple to make and they finish off your item beautifully.
How to make clay handles
To make the handles for my oval roasting dish I first wedged my clay and then shaped it into a thick rectangle. Using the tool pictured above, I just pulled it through the clay. You end up with strips of clay which you then cut to size for your dish. The tool above was handmade for our studio but I am sure you could use a range of tools to get your desired effect.
Note: I made the dish the week before and wrapped it in plastic to it didn’t dry out too much. You don’t want to add handles when they clay is too damp as it will cause the wall of your dish to warp.
How to attach clay handles to a dish
To attach the handles I first measured them to size and marked where I would like them to sit on the dish. I rounded mine slightly. You attach them using the score and slip method.
You finish off by smoothing the clay so the handle blends into the dish.
